Jessica, the modern weaver of Damgo Studio, discovered her passion for sustainable fashion and the textile industry in her immersion with a weaving community.
Mia, the modern weaver of Miago Art, is first and foremost a proud mom to a 2- year old- the source of inspiration that led her to pursue fiber arts. “I wanted to be more intentional in the upbringing of our daughter. I was dedicated to integrating objects of culture into our home as a way to spark interest in learning our Filipino heritage and artistry. That's how I found out about modern weaving and it really opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities.”
Judith, the modern weaver of Art of Yarn, was always a craft enthusiast. In 2018, she started with knitting, crocheting and later on learned other yarn and fiber art techniques like macramé. She pursued this curiosity until she eventually taught herself to weave. In the process of documenting all her projects, she came to discover that what she learned, she can teach and everyone can weave themselves! This was just the beginning of how she spread her love for the art of yarn.
It has always been our greatest belief that the continuity of our culture and the sustainability of our environment lies in the hands of the young. As we dream to grow another community among weave crafters, we put the spotlight on three amazing modern weavers in the Philippines- Jessica Ouano of Damgo Studio, Judith Basco of Art of Yarn and Mia Go of Miago Studio. Through various materials and techniques, they have creatively explored innovative ways to carry on our treasured living tradition through modern weaving.
